Sonoma : we’re here!

We wake up, Katie & Scott land in San Fran, grab a rental car and pick us up.  We’re together! Two couples! Success… so far.  The rest of the morning involves us driving to the house in Glen Ellen for our wine weekend.  A few hours on the road, catching up, Brett & Scott meeting for the first time… we’ve talked about that FOREVER, and it has finally happened!

En route to the home, we pass rows upon rows of the most beautiful landscape – Sonoma views at their finest.

Our journey thus far had left us hungry, so we stopped for a bite to eat at Kenwood.
A logical thought had us sipping on a variety of brews, since we knew the entire weekend would be filled with wine-induced joy.

For the life of me, I cannot remember the type of open-faced sandwich I had.  Some sort of fish, not salmon… maybe salmon? Clearly it wasn’t memorable.  It was hard to keep all the moving pieces in place without toppling over into my lap.  Nevertheless, we laughed and started the weekend off right.

The calm before the beautiful storm.  There was maybe one more work phone call to take [Scott] – so we insisted on me taking a picture of Katie taking a picture of Brett taking a picture of Scott on the phone, with his work, in the parking lot, in God’s-freaking-country-Sonoma.

We paid the bill and hightailed it out of there.  Molly & Chris were driving in a rental with Carley & AJ.  We were all within the same zip code and the energy was palpable.
The house we rented, called Oliviera…due to the olive trees growing on the property… was located up a mini-mountain.  The rental (a VW) handled the 45 degree incline nicely.  Sun shining, wind whipping through our car.  We cruised into the gravel parking lot and got out to explore.

The home has luxurious bedrooms, multiple bathrooms with tiled showers.  A pool, a hot tub, a fully-equipped kitchen, flat screen… the amenities don’t end.  They have their own shampoo and bars of soap made by a nearby body shop.  Fresh ground coffee is available for us in a welcome kit, made by local coffee shop.

We can’t think of a detail they have left out.  Dave and David are apparently a doctor (am I making that up?…) and an interior designer/realtor who recognized this property as a prime location.. let me tell you, they were right!
The other four showed up moments after we arrived… and a good five minutes were spent hugging one another in excitement.  Is this what it feels like to be grown up? To be adults? Four happy couples meet in Sonoma, rent a multi-million dollar home for a long weekend of wine-tasting, Cards Against Humanity laughter, grill outs on the deck and memory making?  I know all are not as fortune.  We are blessed beyond dreams for this opportunity.
A quiet close to our first official day in Sonoma… we grilled chicken, drank on the patio and the four of us girls giggled at our fortune.  Well, at least I did.  What a treat to be enjoying a beautiful property, in a gorgeous part of the country, with some of the best people I know.
I love my life.

I’ve been working on my money folding origami, primarily to leave for tips at restaurants.  Here is an elephant, it only took a whopping 20 minutes!  Oliver requested a mini photo shoot with it – so I obliged.  It was adorable – so I grabbed a few of those images for my new Timeline image.

He sat right next to his elephant, surveying the outdoor landscape.  He’s a goof!

Recently, I test drove a company called Rise Bars.  They make delicious, gluten-free, healthy snack bars.  The packaging and branding really pulled me in, so I gave them a shot.  My favorite was the Protein+ Almond Honey bar.  There are only three ingredients in this bar : Almonds, Honey and Whey Protein.  Pair it with a glass of orange juice and it’s the best post workout snack I’ve found yet.

I’m slightly behind on my Weekly iPhone Pic Drop.  Today may have to be a double post day.  Woop!

Cheers to life,

xo

weekly iPhone pic drop

Someone made an upgrade while walking thru the grocery store yesterday.

From now on, I’m determined to leave tip money in the form of dollar bills folded into origami. It takes my $5 and makes it seem more like $10 with the thought I put into it.  (jk!)

This is one of my close guy friends, he got away with this license pic at the DMV – what a great expression!

Always have been a lake girl, always will be.  I keep a swimsuit in my car for late night dips, and usually wear one underneath my clothes at all times.  You can never be unprepared during MN summers!

Sunsets are one of mother nature’s greatest gifts.  She also whips up a mean storm now and again.  Don’t get me wrong, I love downpours and green, ominous clouds, but perfectly painted backdrops are nice, too.

Little Oliver, or Robér (if you’re feeling native) loves these tiny tennis balls.  He chases them until his tongue hangs out and he demands a timeout from the action.

A wheeler, a dealer, a coupon clipper.  I use the FuelPerks from the grocery store and save at the pump.  Here we are with $2.879 a gallon, I’ll take it.

Whenever the Apple website displays this page, we know something fun’s about to happen. Turns out there’s a beautiful new Retina Macbook Pro in town and she is SEXY!

We had guests from out of town for an evening of chaos and debauchery – I made naughty brownies.  Some people call them slutty brownies, but that makes no sense whatsoever – so I’ve renamed them naughty brownies.  It’s a layer of cookie dough, a layer of Oreo, a layer of brownie.  Insane sugar high ensues.

It’s hot out there Minnesota, jump in a lake and cool off.  We only have 15,405 to choose from!

Listening to.  Sipping on.  Added to the wishlist.

All about the Benjamins.

Since I was 14, I learned what it means to save money.  To invest, also.  I ended up buying my first stock that year (AAPL).  As terrible as I am at math, I truly understood what compounding interest was – even at that age.  I credit my mom & dad with sharing the knowledge and “value of a dollar”.  I think I’m the only one us three girls that actually got it.  Keep in mind, math has never been my favorite but I’m not as confused as her & it is a work in progress.

Now, speaking of money.  And saving.  I have a few things on the docket that I’ve begun to save for.  Most of them travels.  If I put them in writing – I’m more likely to make good on them.

  • Flight to Seattle.  Train to Vancouver.  Lululemon SeaWheeze 2012.  – $450
  • Girls Trip to Chicago – August 2012 [travel, party, crazy].  – $300
  • Flight to Dublin, Ireland.  September 2012.  – $780
  • Lululemon In Stride Jacket.  Size 6.  [this one’s on there in case I win the lottery].  – $108

A few ways I’m implementing cutting costs in my life are as follows:

  • Bike to work [saves gas.  saves polar bears.  extra workout.]
  • Only going out to eat if I have a BOGO, LivingSocial, OpenTable dining Cheque, it’s happy hour, etc [or someone else is paying… hehe]
  • Not drinking at dinner’s out.  It’s an amazing way to wake up not broke.  A nice dinner without alcohol is like having an invisible 1/2 off coupon to the world’s greatest restaurants.  You will be shocked and delighted when the bill arrives – almost like every meal is secretly sponsored by Groupon.  My recommendation – stash a bottle of wine [one of the many Trader Joe’s ones sitting on my desk] & two glasses in your car- find a nice spot to enjoy a few glasses [out of sight] and get your buzz on.

The list will continue to grow as I get creative.  Saving money is a forte of mine – I just need to be more conscious of it.  And don’t we all?  A kick butt website I’ve spent a bit of time on is 20somethingfinance.  Check it out.  Get enlightened.

Cheers to saving monies,

xo

P.S.  Oh yeah, one more thing, check out this little swift chick.  Isn’t she to die for?
